Willie A. Brittle, 51, was accused of the murder, witness reporting that after a dispute he pushed her to the pavement and shot her five times with a large caliber revolver. The man had previously been brought into court on charges of felonious assault on Mrs. Griffin and had been released under $500 bond. It is not known what caused the previous assault or the murder on Friday. Mrs. Griffin, who was 33 years of age, is survived by her mother, Mrs. Mary Riopel of Ivor, a small daughter, Theresa Griffin, and a sister, Lieut. Leanore Riopel, ANC, who had recently returned from overseas. Bail was denied Brittle in the Richmond Hustings Court. Rosary services were conducted for Mrs. Griffin Sunday night in the Harcum Funeral Home, Waverly, where the body was taken, and funeral mass was solemnized for her at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Suffolk, Monday morning. Pallbearers were: J. Whitney Winborne, J.Carr Hill, J. Winston Camp, Holt Brantley, G.C. Niblett and Stephen Boykins. *According to N.C. Death Records she was born in Pamlico, N.C.
