Additional notes by Harold Cowper Vaughan: Sarah Chamberlin (widow of James) is reported in the United States census of Pasquotank County, N.C. for 1784, as having seven persons in her household. Her daughter Sally was married to John Scott, a well-to-do planter who lived near the hamlet of South Mills, Camden County. The Chamberlins were a prominent family up to the period of my youth (1893). Lane Chamberlin was a political figure of some note. As the Scotts were Quakers, none of them was actively engaged in the Revolution. John Scott's widow married (blank) Whitehurst, father of Elliott and Pattie Whitehurst (Mrs. R. Nixon Morgan). Pattie Morgan was a close friend of my mother [Annie Mae Cluff Scott Vaughan]. She died childless. During his early manhood Col. Scott was a mariner, plying between Eastern Carolina and the West Indies. He was born at South Mills, Camden County, N.C. When he retired from the sea he took up his residence in Elizabeth City and ran a general store at the corner of Road and Main streets, Mr. Charles Guirkin being his prinipal clerk. He was a stong Democrat, and with Col. William F. Martin, ran and supported a newspaper in that cause. Col. Martin was his executor or administrator. He is buried in the Pear Tree Cemetery on South Road Street, but the grave is unmarked and we were unable to locate it [September 1933]. Col. Scott bought the property extending from the old Scott House at the head of Burgess Street, on Road Street, from, I think, from the father of Crowder and Charlie Allen. My father [Francis William Sharpe Vaughan] bought this property from the heirs after the War between the Sates, for I think $4500. It was a very bad bargain at the time -- but not now. He sold it to Charlie Morgan, brother of Nixon Morgan, in later life. [from the first draft of Harold's notes:] In later life [James Chamberlain Scott] settled down in Elizabeth City, married and raised a family. He was a colonel of the militia, and bequeathed a sword to our neighbor Col. William Francis Martin. He bought a house on road street at the head of Burgess Street. He was an ardent Democrat, most of my other relatives being Whigs. He had the following children: Sarah, who died in her twenties; Anne Cluff, my mother; Walter, Mary Jane and George John Musgrave Scott, all of whom left descendants. The Scotts were originally Quakers, but saw the error of their ways and recanted, becoming Episcopalians.
