Stokely were brothers who joined and fought in the same unit during the War Between the States. Charles was wounded and unfortunately his brother, Henry, did not survive the war. What follows is a brief account of their service to the Confederacy based on their Confederate Army records. Henry C. Stokely was the son of Jeremiah Delamare Stokely and his second wife Martha. Henry was born in 1842 in Pasquotank County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Pasquotank County at the age of nineteen on July 24, 1861 for the war. He was mustered in as a Private in Company A, 8th Regiment, NC Troops (Infantry). He was captured on Roanoke Island on February 8, 1862 and paroled at Elizabeth City, NC on February 21, 1862. He was exchanged in August of 1862 and rejoined Company A. On December 22, 1863 he was promoted to Corporal. He was listed as present and accounted for until he was killed in action in the Battle of Plymouth, NC on April 20, 1864.
