Will of Joseph Stokely

In the name of God, Amen, I, Joseph Stokley, of the County of Pasquotank and 
the State of North Carolina, being  weak of body but of perfect and sound 
memory calling to mind the mortality of my body that it is appointed for all 
men once to die and after death, to judgement; therefore, I recommend my soul 
into the hands of Almighty God that gave it and my body to be buried in a 
Christian-like manner and as for my worldly goods which it has pleased God to 
bestow upon me, I dispose of in the following manner--

Imprimis: First of all, my will and desire is that as much of my estate shall 
be sold at public auction as will pay all my just debts:

Item   I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife, Elizabeth Stokely, one 
Negro man named Moses, one Negro woman named Cate, and the use of Negro Luke 
until my son, Joseph Stokely, arrives at the age of twenty-one years; also the 
use of one Negro girl named Mereur during the term of her widowhood and also 
one third part of all my stock such as horses, cattle, sheep and hogs and all 
my other property excepting land and Negroes for the term above mentioned.

Item    I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son, Milton Stokely, all my 
land that ( I ) possess in Camden County, it being called the Island, lying 
opposite the land that I now live on to him and his heirs forever, also one 
Negro boy by the name of Tony and one Negro boy by the name of Arthur, to him 
and his heirs forever.

Item    I give and bequeath to my well beloved son, Harvey Stokely, all the 
land I bought of Richard Richardson and also all the land I bought of Jarvis 
Jones to him and his heirs forever. Three Negroes, one named Tom, one Phebey, 
and one named David to him and his heirs forever.

Item    I give and bequeath unto my well beloved daughter, Nancy Stokely, one 
Negro girl named Hannah to her and her heirs forever.

Item    I give and bequeath unto my well beloved daughter, Lusea Stokely, one 
Negro girl by the name of Tamer, to her and her heirs forever.

Item    I give and bequeath unto my well beloved daughter, Salley Stokely, one 
Negro by the name of Mereur to her and her heirs forever.

Item    I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son, Joseph Stokely, all that 
part of land that I now live on from the land as it now runs from the river 
towards Nathaniel Gray's. so binding the lands round to John Kain's land 
thence binding Koens land towards the river, thence running down the river, to 
the first station, it being all I hold on the Northwest side of the said lane, 
containing by estimation,  one hundred acres of land be the same more or less, 
to him and his heirs forever. Also two Negro women, one by the name of 
Lettice, the other by the name of Charity, with this reserve, that the first 
live born child that the said Negro  Charity,  now brings, I reserve for 
myself and the remainder part of both Negroes and all their increase to him 
and his heirs forever. 

Item   I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son, Isaac stokely, one heifer 
yearling to him and his heirs forever.

Item   I give and bequeath unto my well beloved daughter, Polly Lockwood, one 
heifer yearling to her and her heirs forever.

I nominate and appoint to my well beloved friends, Abner Whitney and Samuel 
Spence to be my whole and sole executors to this my last will and testament, 
revoking all other former will or wills by me made and acknowledge this to be 
my last will and testament.

In witness thereof, I have herewith set my hand and seal this___of march in 
the year of our Lord One Thousand seven Hundren and Ninety Nine.
