Elijah Walker, of Moore's Creek, Pender County, aged 101, has applied for a 
pension from the State on the ground of having fought for the Confederacy. He 
enlisted as a volunteer when 68 years old, was wounded in both hands, and has 
refused a pension for 33 years, having been able until now to "make a living." 
This is real heroism, and we wish the old soldier's pension could be made a 
double portion.
