Black, Aged Skipper, Resigns Wilmington, Jan. 2 - Captain David J. Black, for 36 years steamboat skipper in all the Cape Fear system of navigation, which includes the Cape Fear main river, Long creek and Town creek, has made his last run on the celebrated steamer A.P. Hurt from Fayetteville to Wilmington, and has retired to his farm at Point Caswell, Pender County, where henceforth he will raise hogs and cattle and corn, peanuts, and velvet beans. During his long career, Captain Black has never lost a vessel and lost but one man overboard, a deck hand who walked into the river some time last year.
