The Pender Chronicle says: Mr. H.S. Harrell of Long Creek township was in 
Burgaw Monday and proved his skills as a snake killer. Mr. Harrell had with 
him a diamond back rattle snake six feet long, which he killed near his lot 
gate. The snake had nine rattles and a button. It was one of the largest 
snakes seen in these parts in some time.
