Perquimans County, NC - Court Records File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Donna Cooper John Earle of Bath Palatine and the rest of the true and absolute Lord Proprietors of all Carolina, Greeting: To our trusty and well beloved Captain Ralph Fletcher, and John Barrow, Francis Foster, Captain James Cole, Captain John Stepney, and William Bartlett gent. being well assured of your Loyalty, prudence & integrity do hereby assigne and appoint you Justices of the Peace for the p'cinct of Perquimans in the County of Albemarle Joyntly and Severally to keep and cause to be kept her Majesties peace within the said Precinct an also to keepe or cause to be kept all lawful statutes made for the good government of this County and you or any three of you whereof one Ralph Fletcher, John Barrow, Francis Foster shall be one shall hold and keepe a Court for your said Precinct seven times every yeare viz the Tuesday in the months of October, November, December, January, February, March and August there to try by a Jury of twelve true & lawfull men all Petty larcenies, all unlawfull riotts, and routes that shall be committed within your precinct, and Judgement there on to give such paines and Penalties as by law actions, not exceeding the Summ of fifty pounds that shall bye lawful process be brought before you and also once a year viz the 2d Tuesday in the month of August you shall hold a Court for the tryall of all Causes pertaining to Orphans and their estates with full power to award, process, hear and determine all and every matter, cause, and things for the disposal & reliefof orphans and Securing their estate within your precinct that shall be by information, plaint or any other ways or meanes be brought before you and a record thereof you shall cause to be kept of all ye orphans in your precinct, their guardians, the value of their estate, and what security is given for the same which you shall cause to be altered & renewed as often as you shall find necessary. This commission to continue during our pleasure. Given under our hands and Seals of our Colony the 30th day of July 1702 in the first yeare of her Majesties reign.
