The original is in the hands of Sallie Vale (Borum) and her husband Steve Elmore. She is the daughter of my father’s sister Anne Thompson Bradsher Borum. A letter dated December 5, 1870 at Bushy Fork, Person Co. NC from William Arch Bradsher to his daughter Corinna Frances Bradsher who was married on 15 October 1865 to John Pomfret Cannady of Granville County. The couple lived in Granville County. Bushy Fork, Person Co. NC December 5th, 1870 Dear Daughter, Yours of 28th ultimo was handed me by cousin Liza the contents read with pleasure. I was glad to hear from you all & that you were all well. You stated in yours you like long letters but as cousin Liza have been up here several days and have learned all the news, and will be able to tell you more than I can write so it will not be nesssary for me to write long note. You stated you wish me to send your ottomans by cousin Liza. She thinks she cant well carry them and I don’t think she can carry them safe, be danger of breaking off the feet. I will send them to you by the first safe chance. I got your note of Dr. Lea’s death and wished to know what had become of Jimmie his son. I don’t know nothing about him. Your Grand Father nor none of the family have never received any letters from Ark. Since his death have been reported. The new came by others writing from that country to their friends. But I expect his death is true. I have thought it very strange that his son have not written or some of the family before this time. I don’t know any thing about your Aunt Mary’s sweet heart. Oh I not even know that she had one untill you wrote about it but Ben Bradsher was here when I got your letter. I asked him and he said she had sweet heart. He lived in Tenn and his name was John and that was all he would tell me about it. You stated you wish to know about the Piano and that we had vocal musick we would not want instrumental. I don’t see how we can do without now for I sure had much use for instrumental music without the vocal and your Little Brother Sidney is very fond of music and your big Brother was very fond of music when he was at home last summer. So I reason I shall have to keep it to train my sons “in the arts of music.” You say if you had nothing to contend with out side of your own little family that you would be happy. My Dear daughter you should not go abroad to hunt up trouble for all of us have trouble enough without hunting up that which does not concern us. Such course only leads us into more trouble. The world is full of troubles and we must look to higher forms for comfort. I received a letter from Darcy Saturday he says he is quite unwell with pain in his side and sick every morning. He says he cant study but short time at a time. I wrote him he might come home Christmas. I am very uneasy about Darcy’s health. I fear he will not be able to carry on his studies. We are all well and doing the best we can. I made very good crop tobacco but I fear it will be like yours. Fraid it wont pay. Light crop corn. Mrs. Bradsher has just had a set of teeth put in. Your little Brother can sit alone & is very interesting to his mother. Miss Laura spent last week with us. Have not been to Leasburg in some time. Was at your G. father Torian a few weeks ago. All well. Mrs. Dixon [?] was hear last week. Your Uncle Jimmie family is all well. I have not seen Miss Jacky since meeting. Mr. John Henry is building a fine house. I am having my porches repaired and a new one built on the north side of the house. We are rebuilding our Saw mill. Col. Rogers had an exibition last Friday, uncommonly low crowd. Mrs. Bradsher and myself did not. Laura went to meet her Father to take her home. I gave cousin Liza the indigo and maddras and send your washboard. I have no sausage grinder therefore cant send it. Mrs. Bradsher & son send their love to all. Sam sends his love. Write soon. Your Father W. A. Bradsher
