CANNON Grantee: Wilks BROOKS Enslaved person: Vilet, about 9 years old Date: 14 Apr 1826 State of North Carolina} Pitt County} Know all men by these presents that I, Charles C.W. Cannon hath bargained and sold unto Wilks Brooks of the County of Pitt, a certain negro girl by the name of Vilet, about nine years of age, for the consideration of the sum of two hundred and twenty-five dollars, to me in hand paid, the receipt and payment I do hereby acknowledge, have bargained and sold the aforeseaid Vilet to the said Wilks Brooks, him and his heirs forever, and I for myself do covenant to and with said Brooks, to warrant and forever defend the right of the said negro to the said Brooks to be free from all claims whatsoever. In witness whereof I do here unto put my hand and seal this the 14th April 1826. Charles C.W. Cannon [seal mark] Test: William Clark May Term 1826. Then the above Bill of Sale from Charles C.W. Cannon to Wilks Brooks was exhibited into open court and proved in due form of law by the oath of William Clark, a witness thereto, ordered to be registered. Attest. Jas.
