Know all men by these presents that I, William Clark, for and in consideration of the [sum of] 
four hundred dollars to me in hand paid by Alfred Stocks of the County of [Pitt and] State of 
North Carolina, the receipt and payment whereof I do hereby acknowledge, hath [given], 
granted, bargained, sold and conveyed, and by these presents doth give, grant, bargain [and 
sell] unto the said Alfred Stocks, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, one negro girl 
[named] Lousetta, to have and to hold unto the said Alfred Stocks, his heirs and assigns the 
aforesaid negro girl named Lousetta, and I, the said William Clark,doth forever defend the right 
and title to the aforesaid negro girl Lousetta to be [free and] clear from the lawful claim or claims 
of any person or persons whatsoever. Witness my hand and seal this 6th April 1839.

May Sessions 1839. Then this bill of sale was [exhibited] into open court and acknowledged by 
William Clark to be his act and [deed]. Let it be registered.
