Know all men by these presents, that whereas my mother Cordelia Carman of the County of Pitt 
and State of North Carolina did on the twentieth day of August, one thousand eight hundred and 
forty-four, execute a Deed of Gift to me, Hannah J. Lyons, for certain negroes, therein specified, 
reserving to herself a life estate in the said negroes, as on reference to said Deed of Gift will 
more fully appear. Now this indenture, witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of fifty 
dollars to me in hand paid by the said Cordelia Carman, at the time of executing these presents, 
the receipt whereof is hereby fully acknowledged, have granted, bargained, sold, conveyed, 
acquitted and released, and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, convey, acquit and 
release unto the said Cordelia Carman, her heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, all of 
my interest, right and title in and to the following named negroes (Viz) Rachel, David, Noah, 
Augustus and Zilpha, and their increase, to have and to hold unto her, the aforesaid Cordelia 
Carman, her heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns, forever free and discharged from 
any and all claim which I have or may be entitled to by virtue of the aforesaid deed of gift, and 
for the better security of the title hereby conveyed, I do for myself, my heirs, executors, 
administrators, and assigns do warrant and forever defend the same from the lawful claim or 
claims of any and all person whatsoever.
In testimony whereof, I, the said Hannah J. Lyons, do hereunto set my hand and seal this the 
24th January 1851.

Then this deed from Hannah J. Lyons to Cordelia Carman was exhibited into open court and 
duly proved on oath of Edward Carman, a witness thereto. Let it be registered.
