Know all men by these presents, that I, Susannah Stocks of the County and State aforesaid, for 
the natural love and affection which I have and bear towards my son Alfred Stocks, and the 
further consideration of the sum of one dollar to me in hand paid by the aforesaid Alfred Stocks, 
the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge, I have given, granted and by these presents doth 
give, grant and deliver to the said Alfred, one negro boy by the name of Gabriel, aged about 
fourteen years, during his natural life, and after the death of the said Alfred, to his lawful heirs, to 
have and to hold the aforesaid negro Gabriel to him and said Alfred Stocks during his natural life 
and then to his lawful heirs, to him, his heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns forever, 
and I the said Susannah Stocks for myself and my heirs, executors, and assigns, do warrant 
and forever defend the right and title of said negro to him the said Alfred, his heirs and assigns. 
In testimony whereof, I, the said S. Stocks have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day of 
November 1837.

Then this Deed of Gift was exhibited into open court and proved in due form of law by the oath 
of Henry Smith, a subscribing witness thereto. Let it be registered.
