Know all men by these presents that I, Susan Stocks, for and in consideration of the just and full 
sum of three hundred and thirteen dollars and sixty-five cents to me in hand paid by John 
Stocks, the receipt I hereby acknowledge, and I therewith satisfied, and paid, for a negro girl by 
the name of Cherry, now about seven years of age, the title of the above mentioned negro girl I 
warrant and forever defend against the lawful claim or claims of all and every person 
whatsoever for which I bind myself, my heirs, executors and administrators and assigns forever 
unto my son John Stocks, to him, his heirs, executors and administrators and assigns forever. In 
witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the 31st day of May 1837.
