Know all men by these presents that I, Susan Stocks of the County and State aforesaid of the 
one part, and Benjamin Tripp of the other part, have bargained and sold unto the said Benj. 
Tripp a certain negro woman and child by the name of Penny, and her child by the name of 
Caroline, the age of said woman is supposed to be about forty-four years, and the child about 
three years, for the sum of two hundred and eighty-five dollars, the title of said negroes I warrant 
to be good, free and clear of the claim or claims of any person, and further I bind myself, my 
heirs, executors, administrators and assigns to defend the title the said negroes unto the said 
Benjamin Tripp, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns forever free and clear of the 
lawful claim or claims of all and every person whatsoever. In witness whereof I have hereunto 
set my hand and seal. July the 20th 1847.

Then this deed from Susan Stocks to Benjamin Tripp was proven in open court by the oath of 
Joseph Ringgold and ordered to be registered.
