WOOTEN Grantee: Stephen SMITH Enslaved person: Shade, about 12 years old; Dick, about 9 years old Date: [2 or 22?] Aug 1823 [Know] all men by these presents, that I, Arthur Wooten of the County of Pitt and State of [North Carolina], for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred and fifty dollars, to me [in hand] paid, the receipt whereof I do acknowledge, by Stephen Smith of the County and State [aforesaid have] bargained and sold unto the said Stephen Smith two negro boys, slaves, one named [Shade] about twelve years of age and one named Dick, about nine years of age, to [have and] to hold the said negro boys slaves to him the said Stephen Smith, his heirs, administrators and assigns forever, and I do hereby covenant and [?] to warrant and defend the said negro boys slaves, Shade and Dick, to Stephen Smith, his executors, administrators and assigns, against the lawful [claims?] and all persons. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this [-second] day of August One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty- Three. Arthur F.
