Pitt County, NC - John Bryan Revolutionary War Pension, 1834 ~~~~~~~~~~ December 3, 1937 Marybelle Delamar Raleigh, NC Dear Madam: Reference is made to your request for information relative to John Bryant, a Revolutionary War soldier from Pitt County, North Carolina. The data which follow were obtained from papers on file in the pension claim W.5915 based upon the military service of John Bryan (personal signature Bryan.) He was born May 26, 1761 in Bertie County, North Carolina and moved to Pitt County, North Carolina when very young. The names of his parents were not given. While living in Pitt County, he enlisted and served as private with the North Carolina Troops as follows: from about March 8, 1779, five months in Captain James Lanier's Company in Colonel Jonas Johnson's Regiment and was in the battle of Stono; next served three months on the Neuse River in pursuit of Tories, names of officers not given; from about August 1780, served three months in Captain John Hodges' Company in Colonel Benjamin Seawell's Regiment; from about April 1781, served three months under Captains James Mayo and John Moye in Colonel Richard Dobbs Spaight's Regiment; also served twelve months in Captain Hodge's Company under "Baron Elobec" and was discharged near the close of the Revolution. John Bryan was allowed pension on his application executed October 11, 1834 at which time he was living in Pitt County, North Carolina. He gave the following names of neighbors who knew of his service: Robertson Jenkins, Turner Hinse, Henry Hopkins, John Taylor and Nehemiah Taylor. John Bryan died February 24, 1841. John Bryan married previous to the first of January 1794, Nancy whose maiden name was not given. She moved to Pitt County, North Carolina from Virginia when she was a small girl. As the widow of John Bryan, Nancy's name was signed by a mark as Bryant, was allowed pension on her application executed January 27, 1846 at which time whe was living in Pitt County, aged seventy-eight years. She was living in that county in 1849. It was stated that they had four children in 1798 but the only name given was that of the eldest child, Dinah, who in 1845 was the wife of Henry Moore and she then stated that she was fifty-nine years of age on January 10, 1846. In 1848 one Henry Moore of Pitt County stated that he was aged about forty-eight years but it was not shown that he was the husband of said Dinah. John Bryan lived with his mother during the Revolution and in 1838 he stated that his mother had moved to Georgia about fifty years before. In 1846 Dinah Whitehurst stated that she was the sister of the widow Nancy Bryan and that her first child, Reuben Whitehurst, was born September 13, 1787. Reuben Whitehurst was living in Pitt County in 1846. In 1838 Francis Bryan (personal signature Bryan) and William Whitehurst were living in Pitt County, North Carolina, and Henry P. Bryan (personal signature Bryan) was Justice of the Court of Pleas and Sessions of Pitt County but their relationship to the soldier was not shown. in 1846 one Jesse Thomas was living in Pitt County aged about thirty- seven years and stated he was present when the soldier John Bryan died.
