The Semi-Weekly Messenger (Wilmington NC) 10 June 1898
Henry Nobles, a colored boy 16 years old was killed by lightning at Ayden, NC,
Monday evening at 5 o'clock. He was at work for Mr John Hart. He had been
building some fence and had started across a small field of cotton toward Mr
Hart's lot when the lightning struck him. He was near the lot and was asking
some boys to drive Mr Hart's cows up the lane and help him get them in the lot.
Several persons were looking at him. He appeared to be covered in flames of
fire. It tore out the top of his hat crown and blistered his chin and breast.
