At the time, it was on the road coming from Willow Green in Greene County toward Lang's Crossroads. It was on the west side of the road on high ground, I am guessing 1/4-3/4 mile north of Sandy Run. I think that there is newer house on the site now. The siding shown in the photo was aluminum or vinyl, covering the original siding. I think that the chimney was original (obviously, the cinder block was not original). There was a very small room to the right as you enter the front door, with the underside of the steep, narrow stairs going up to the 2nd floor intruding into it. The main room was to the left with a nice mantel. Upstairs was a small room above the small room on the 1st floor & a large room over the great room, with a much simpler fireplace. I am uncertain as to the original use of the shed in back, but it appeared to be original to the structure. After Jackie Moye opened her antique shop in it, I took my daughter to see the house & she was most gracious to let us wander around in it. Joel Moye, b. ca. 1768 in Pitt Co., NC, d. ca. 1817[1] in Pitt Co.; m. ca. 1790 to Sarah Darden[2], b. Feb. 16, 1775, d. after Oct. 1834[3], dau. of William Darden and Claodesha Stephenson. In the 1790 Pitt County Census, Joel Moye had 1 white male 16 or older, 1 white female, 1 other free person and 5 slaves in his household. In 1809, Joel Moye owned a mare named "Lady Legs" which he raced. In the 1815 Pitt Co. Tax list, Joel is listed in Capt. Carr's District as owning 949 acres valued at $4900.50 and had 10 taxable slaves. On Feb. 24, 1818, Sarah Moye received her dower of 1/3 of the 480 acres Joel Moye dec'd. In the 1820 Pitt County Census, "Sary" Moye had in her household, 1 male 10–15, 2 males 18–25, 2 females 10–15, 1 female 26–44, 1 female over 45, 1 male slave under 14, 1 male slave over 452 female slaves under 14, 1 female slave 14–25, and 1 female slave over 45. Joel and Sarah Moye had 8 known children: Claodisha, Alfred, Abraham D., Elbert D., Elizabeth (Betsy), William Joel D., Minerva Moye, and Eliza Moye. The above is from Roger Kammerer's compilation of their descendants-some prominent Pitt Co people who probably lived in that house. [1] Pitt County Deed Book A A, p. 213.
