follow in Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro. Surviving: husband of 65 years, T. Dick

and his wife, Mary Jane, of Greenville, N.C.; grandchildren, Melanie Roberts of

officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Christian Church Cemetery. Widow

Crossroads Cemetery in Philippi, W.Va. Born May 17, 1907, in Barbour County, 
W.Va., d/o late John R. and Olive Oaster Heltzel. Preceded in death by her 
husband, Clarence H. "Dick" Shaw in 1966, and her daughter, Louise Smith, in 
2000. Surviving are her daughter, Maxine Boylen and husband Wilford of Archdale, 
N.C.; nine grandchildren, Terry Smith of Clarksburg, W.Va., Randy Smith of 
Fairmount, W.Va., Ricky Smith of Shinnston, W.Va., Joyce Ward, Jean Hebert, 
Jackie Allred, Max Boylen, Julie Hunt and Mark Boylen, all of North Carolina; 12 
great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. 

RANDLEMAN - Virgil Vermont Burrow, 96, of passed on June 2nd at Randolph 
Hospital. Funeral service will be 4 p.m. June 5th at Ridge Funeral Home, 
Asheboro; Rev. Samuel Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial 
Park. Widower of Annie Davidson Burrow. Surviving: son, Virgil "Buck" Burrow Jr.

Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park. Surviving; husband, the Rev. George

TRINITY - Robert L. Blair Jr., of Trinity, passed on June 3rd at GrayBrier 
Nursing and Retirement Center. Funeral will be June 7th at 2 p.m. at Archdale 
Friends Meeting; Rev. Ben Hurley officiating. Burial will be in Springfield 
Friends Meeting Cemetery. Born Nov. 24, 1913, in Randolph County, s/o Robert L. 
Blair Sr. and Ocia Redding Blair. On April 18, 1954, he married Sara Seigler 
Blair, who died June 4, 2001. Preceded in death by brothers, Stanley R. Blair 
and Charles E. Blair. Also preceding him in death was a niece, Janet Blair 
Miller. Surviving: son, Robert L. Blair III of the home; a nephew, Charles Blair 
and wife, Robin, of Jamestown; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Blair of High Point and 
Mildred Blair of Bristol, Va.; a great-nephew, Will Blair; and great-niece, 
Katelyn Blair. 

RAMSEUR - Ruby Lawson Grill, 84, formerly of Ramseur, passed on June 3rd at 
Zerbe Sisters Nursing Center, Narvon, Pa. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. 
June 8th at Furman Home for Funerals, Leola, Pa. Burial will be in Riverview 
Burial Park. She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Chester Grill.

Born in Randolph County on Nov. 19, 1919, d/o James Albert and Effie Jane

Ralph Shaw. Surviving: daughter, Rebecca L. Thompson of the home; granddaughter, 
Rhonda K. Thompson of Louisville, Ky.; sisters, Grace Hurley, Irene Hammer,

THOMASVILLE -- Elizabeth Hammond Russell, age 89, passed on June 4th at her 
home. Funeral service will be June 8th at 2 p.m. in the Ridge Funeral Home 
Chapel. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery. Born on Aug. 30, 1915, in 
Randolph County to John Clifford and Pearl Voncannon Hammond. Preceded in death 
by her husband, Everette Eugene Russell; her sisters, Louise H. Lankford, Lula 
Mae H. Surratt; and her brother, C. Paul Hammond. Surviving: daughters, Barbara 
R. Thomas and husband, Scott, of Raleigh, Judith R. McKague and husband, Ron, of 
Thomasville; sister, Earlene H. Nelson of Asheboro; grandchildren, Beth T. Tripp 
and husband, Raymond, of Newport News, Va., Susan T. Worley and husband, Brian,

Floral Garden Memorial Park. Born July 10, 1908, d/o Frank and Gertrude Blair 
Livengood. On Dec. 22, 1929, she married Irvin Lester Hall, who died in 1993.

Wesleyan Church Cemetery. D/O late Robert Lee and Bertha Bean King. Preceded in 
death by her husband, Charles Swaney. She is survived by daughter, Ann Swaney 
McLaughlin of Asheboro; granddaughters, Jennifer Small of Cleveland, Tenn., Gina 
McLaughlin of Asheboro; sisters, Ina Rich, Myrtle Lucas, Rona Trotter, Martha

ARCHDALE - Mrs. Betty Bulla Freeman, 77,passed on June 6th at High Point 
Regional Hospital. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. June 9th at the chapel of Cumby 
Family Funeral Service; with the Rev. James Smith and Rev. Roland Cavanaugh, 
officiating. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Born July 
15, 1927, in Guilford County, d/o Robert and Edith Sechrest Bulla. She was 
married to Samuel Lloyd Freeman, who preceded her in death in 1992. Surviving 
are one daughter, Sherrill Smith and husband Charles of High Point; four sons, 
Keith Freeman and wife Cathy of Trinity, Dale Freeman and wife Debbie of Sophia, 
Tim Freeman and wife Patricia of Trinity, and David Freeman of Archdale; nine

June 10, 1924, the daughter of Alfred Redding and Nannie Leona Stevenson 
Laughlin, who preceded her in death. Preceded in death by her husband, Herbert 
Boggs. Surviving: brother, David Daniel Laughlin of Cedar Falls; and several 
nieces and nephews.

Surviving are sons, Jimmie Hammond Jr. and Jonathan Hammond; daughters, Tawanda

Peggye Hammond, Linda Stephan and Tracye Butler; 17 grandchildren; three great-
grandchildren. 

ARCHDALE - Mrs. Glenda Carpenter Ward, 60, passed on June 13th at her home. 
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lexington Avenue Baptist Church with 
the Rev. Charlie Waller and the Rev. Ray Hamilton officiating. Interment will 
follow in Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery. Born March 24, 1945, in 
Thomasville, d/o late Walter Gray and Catherine Shuskey Carpenter. Husband, 
Ronald Ward survives of the home. Also surviving are two daughters, Ashlie Ward 
Maxwell and husband Dean of Midway, and Anissa Ward Hutchins and husband Scott 
of Trinity; a son, Brian Heath Ward and wife Jennifer of Trinity; a brother, 
David Ray Carpenter of High Point; and eight grandchildren. 

HIGH POINT - Randolph Native Mrs. Hazel Farlow Ward, 100, passed on June 13th at 
High Point Regional Health System. Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. June 15th at 
Westchester Baptist Church; Rev. Eric Peacock. Burial will be in Marlboro 
Friends Meeting Cemetery. Born Aug. 27, 1904, in Randolph County, the daughter 
of William Dougans and Lelia Sawyer Farlow. In April 1927, she married William 
Carl Ward, who died Dec. 22, 1950. Surviving are he daughter, Frances W. 
Thornton and Husband Wilburn of Asheville; three grandchildren, Lennie Thornton 
and wife Cynthia of Asheville; Rick Thornton and wife Leslee of Fairview, and 
Mrs. Kim Leibman of Santa Fe, N.M.; and six great-grandchildren. 

ASHEBORO - Avelina Ramos, age 81, passed on June 13th at Randolph Hospital, 
Asheboro, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Funeral services will be 
held on June 16th at 6 p.m. at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 437 Sunset Ave.; 
Rev. Jack Ogburn officiating. Surviving: husband, Mario Borges Ramos of the 
home; son, Mario Sergio Ramos and his wife, Patricia Shevlin of Asheboro; and 13 
brothers and sisters, all of Brazil. 

ASHEBORO - Tony Renfred Lee, 55, passed on June 13th at Randolph Hospital.

Salem. Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. June 17th at Archdale United Methodist 
Church with Dana McKim, pastor, and Rev. Harold Shives, officiating. Interment 
will follow in Floral Garden Memorial Park. Born April 28, 1937, in High Point, 
a son of Floyd Thomas Sullivan and Nora Stevenson Sullivan. Surviving are his 
wife Judy Ingram Sullivan of the home; one daughter, Margaret Brannon and her 
husband Charles of High Point; two grandchildren, Gregory Thomas Brannon and 
Elizabeth Suzanne Brannon; and two sisters, Darnell Bullins and her husband

Strickland and husband, Larry, of Goldsboro; son, Colon L. Richardson Jr. and

RANDLEMAN -- Roger D. DeMay, 55,passed on June 29th at his home. Memorial 
service will be 3 p.m. July 4th at Covenant Christian Church; Rev. Gary Davidson 
officiating. Surviving are daughter, Jennifer Wilson of Randleman; son, Steven 
DeMay of Franklinville; mother, Rosemary DeWistelaere of Asheboro; brothers, 
Gary Davidson of Asheboro, Stanley Davidson of Detroit, Mich.; two 
grandchildren.

are wife, Faith Marie Davis; father and stepmother, Bob and Ruby Davis of Troy;

ASHEBORO -- Lucille Needham Craven, 85,passed on June 30th at Clapp's 
Convalescent Nursing Home. Funeral services for Mrs. Craven will be held at 2 
p.m. July 3rd at West Asheboro Church of God; Rev. Thurman Jenkins, Dr. Ron 
Martin and Rev. Michael Woolard officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery. 
Born Aug. 8, 1919, to the late John and Mittie Brown Needham. Preceded in death 
by her husband of 52 years, Leon Craven; brothers, Carl Needham, Alfred Needham, 
Tom Needham; sisters, Edith Lee and Clara Mae Needham. Survived by her daughter, 
Patsy Reeder; and husband, Charles of Asheboro; son, Johnny L. Craven and wife, 
Celia, of Asheboro; sister, Betty N. York of Asheboro; grandchildren, Kathryn C. 
Watson and husband, Frankie, Jason Reeder and wife, Dianne, Joseph Reeder, Sarah
