Will of Sawney Cranford Extracted from original on file in Raleigh, NC Randolph County, N.C. I, Sawney Cranford of the County of Randolph and State of North Carolina being of sound mind and memory but considering the uncertainty of my Earthly Existence do make and declare this my last Will and Testament. In manner and form following. That is to say first that my executor (herein after Named) Shall provide for my Body a decent burial suitable to the wishes of my relations and friends and pay all funeral expenses together with my Just Debts, however and to whomsoever owing, out of the moneys that may first come into his Hands as a part or parcel of my Estate, first I give and bequeath to my beloved Wife Ruth Cranford two feather Beds and furniture consisting of Eight Sheets Four Blankets and two Bed Quilts, one Small Pot and Oven, one young Cow or heifer, Two Hundred and fifty pounds of Coffee and Ten pounds of Sugar and Two Gallons of Molasses, as to my Lands or real Estate I have now to devise to my said Wife or any Body else, I give and bequeath to my oldest Son Seth Cranford one Cow and Calf and one feather Bed, I give and bequeath to my oldest Daughter Sally Russell one Cow and Calf and one feather Bed, I give and bequeath to my Second daughter Elisabeth Shaw one Cow and calf and one feather Bed. I give and bequeath to my Third Daughter Cynthia Leadwell one Cow and Calf and one feather Bed, I give and bequeath to my Second Son Henry Cranford one Cow and Calf and One Bed, I give and bequeath to my Third Son Temple Cranford one Cow and Calf and one feather Bed, I give and bequeath to my fourth and last Son (Thomas), One Cow and Calf and One feather bed, the above gifts and bequeathments to my Said children have been advanced to each and all, I give and bequeath to my two youngest daughters, Children of my Second or Present Wife, Miranda Cranford and Mary Cranford, Three Dollars each. This will and desire is that all the residue of my Estate after taking out The Legacies before mentioned Shall be sold and the debts owing to me all collected and if there should be any surplus over and above the payments of Debts and Expenses and Legacies that such Surpluses shall be Equally divided and paid over to my Said Wife and all my Children in equal portions. Share and Share alike to them and each and every of them, their Executors Administrators and Assigns absolutely forever, and whereas my two youngest Daughters Miranda and Mary Cranford are Miners, one aged two years and the other five months, consequently Miranda will not be of age until the 29th day of August 1866 and Mary until the 3rd day of July 1868. Now therefore my will and desire is that Emsley Lassiter is hereby Constituted and appointed Guardian of these my two children to have and to hold the Custody and Guardianship, Both of their respective persons untill they Said Children shall severally arrive at the full age of Twenty One years; and lastly I do hereby Constitute and appoint Emsley Lassiter my Lawful Executor to all interests and purposes, to execute this my last Will and Testament according to the true intent and meaning of the Same, and every part and clause Thereof revoking and declaring utterly void, all other Wills and Testaments by me heretofore made, in Testimony whereof, I the said, Sawney Cranford do hereunto set my hand this the 14th day of January 1848 his Sawney (x) Cranford (Seal) Mark Signed, Sealed, Published and delivered by the said Sawney Cranford to be his Will and Testament in presence of us who at his request in his Presence and in the presence of Each other do Subscribe our name as Witnesses thereto.
