Born Jan. 4, 1850, in Richmond County, NC.
Educated at Davidson College, in North Carolina, and at the University of 
Virginia;
Has been engaged in the practice of law since 1873, and was a solicitor of the 
seventh judicial district of North Carolina from Jan. 1887 to Jan. 1895;
Elected a member of the corporation commissioned by the Legislature in 1899, 
assuming office on April 1 of that year;
Was reelected a member of the commission by the people in 1900 for a term of 
six years and is now chairman of the commission.
