Written: March 12, 1771

“One tract of 640 acres which was granted to John Bostick in 1771, surveyed by 
Robert Jarman, D. S. March 12th, 1771, on the north side of North Fork of 
Cartledge Creek, and run with PHILEMON THOMAS’s line west, etc. (grant No. 182, 
file no. 2748.) This land ran almost to what is now the town of Ellerbe. A 300-
acre grant in 1773, where stood the PHILEMON THOMAS, later McKenzie-Covington 
house, (see picture.) The W. S. Shurley tract was another owned by PHILEMON, 
which reached from Hitchcock Creek (at Rockingham) northward to join the 
PHILEMON THOMAS lands.” [This land was first sold to a man named PHILEMON 
THOMAS in 1768.]
