"In the midst of life we are in death; of whom may we seek for succor but of Thee, O Lord." Born July 9th, 1849, at the ancestral home in Richmond County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Pressley Nelms Stanback and his wife Mrs. Elizabeth Little Stanback. They died in 1891, after long useful lives, during which they gave their children every possible advantage, and endeavored to implant in their hearts the many cardinal Christian virtues that combined to make patriotic useful citizens. Our deceased friend was educated largely at Trinity College, and after emigrating to Mississippi when quite a young man, followed agriculture pursuits for a while, then took a full course in law at the University of Mississippi, which is located in Oxford. He was successful in this profession, and while his home town was not large, he was frequently called to other places in consultation, and I am told he was considered capable, just and upright, as a citizen of his town and commonwealth, and in the defense of many who begged for mercy at the hands of the courts, sought adjudication of claims and counter claims. On April 15th, 1874, Mr. Stanback was very happily married to Miss Ann Winfred Davis, of Holly Springs, Miss. Had he been spared just a trifle over a year longer, they could have gathered their children and grandchildren around them for a celebration of their Golden wedding anniversary, and looked back with loving interest over the many happy years spent together, as their devotion to each other is is said to have been very beautiful, and their union was blesses with 11 children Left to mourn their loss, but to rejoice in the blessed life of Immortality beyond the grave, are the devoted wife, two sons, E. D. Stanback of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, and W. P. Stanback of Byhalia, Mrs. A. B. Clark of La Grange, GA., Miss Maude L. Stanback, who holds a responsible government position in Washington D.C., and Mrs. W. C. Hardison, who is much beloved in our town. To them and to an only sister, Mrs. Judith S. Dockery of Wadesboro, and two brothers, Messrs. J. F. Stanback of Raleigh and Charles Stanback of Mt. Gilead, the deepest sympathy is extended, also the hope that they may realize that our trials and sorrows are but stepping-stones in the divine economy of God's plan, and that the light of His love shall, in time to come, dispel all darkness and bring us into the morning of eternal peace.
