In the division of old Bladen County all the western lands became a new and distinct county known as “Robeson” to be effective January 6th 1787. It was so called in honor of the late Colonel Thomas Robeson, whose plantation stood on the southwest bank of the Cape Fear River near the present day town of Tar Heel in Bladen County. Like many of the early families of the upper Cape Fear River Valley, the “Robeson” family was of Scottish origin. Being a proper name it is actually spoken differently than the way it appears in the English sense. "Robeson" in the old Scottish “Gaelic” tradition is pronounced as "Rah-bee-son,” and that is the correct way to speak our name. Henceforth, please remember and be proud of the correct pronunciation of the name of the county of your ancestral heritage.
