After several years of appropriating funds and erecting it’s first buildings, the first patient was admitted in the year 1856. Being a state hospital, patients were admitted from all over the state of North Carolina. Once patients were admitted many lived the rest of their natural lives in that facility. The Dorothea Dix Hospital Cemetery covers an approximately three acre area on the campus of the state hospital. The First burial there was in 1859, and the last was in the year 1970. Throughout the years many Robesonians who became residents there died and at least 25 were buried in many unmarked graves in this cemetery. Thanks to a group of volunteers in 1991, who under the leadership of Dave David of Physical Plan and Faye McArthur of Community Relations Department, began research in the North Carolina State Archives and the Dorothea Dix Hospital Medical Records Department began to identify the graves. This resulted in the identification of 754 or 958 graves of people who have been buried in the cemetery. Of these 754 there have been 25 burials whose county of residence was listed as Robeson County. On September 15, 2007 a website was created which lists all of the 754 known burials in the Dorothea Dix Hospital Cemetery at: http://cemeterycensus.com/nc/wake/cem244.htm. On September 17, 2007 the compiler, Sam West, of this list has gone through and gleaned information on the known Robesonians who were buried in this cemetery, and list this information in the order of their deaths as follows: 1.
