The present building, built in 1928, has a cornerstone with date of organization listed as 1711. This date of organization on the cornerstone is perhaps an error of the hands of engraver, as there were no settlement of people of organized Christianity in this area of the state here prior to the decade of the l750s. From looking at Methodist records [published and unpublished] as well as county and other records, the church was most likely organized about the year 1811, or very soon thereafter. No earlier records concerning the congregation of church can be found previous to the year 1865. Most of the fragments of the early records concerning Bethesda comes from Minister's Journals, Methodist Conference and Circuit records, the Christian Advocate, as well as other early newspapers from southeastern North Carolina. From this early source we also glean deaths which occurred within the congregation between the years of 1870-1878. These deaths were as now follows: BETHESDA METHODIST CHURCH DEATHS 1870-1878 NAMES OF MEMBERS DEATH DATES CAROLINE JONES JUL 21 1870 NICHOLAS T. SEALY APR 25 1874 MARY C. SEELY JAN 1875 ALICE M.
