Oct. 10, 1857, North Carolina Argus Written: September 19, 1857 Recorded: October 10, 1857 PROCLAMATION STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA ROBESON COUNTY Whereas, information has been made to us, ALEXANDER McMILLAN and J. N. CROSBY, two of the acting Justices of the Peace for the said County, that certain slaves belonging to different persons to wit: HENRY, a slave belonging to R. C. RHODES DICK, a slave belonging to J. W. ALFORD ENOCH, a slave belonging to J. W. CARMICHAEL SANDY, a slave belonging to BENJ. GRIST BILL, a slave belonging to J. C. BAKER ANDREW, a slave belonging to HENRY BULLOCK JR. have absented themselves from their Masters and are lurking about in the County committing acts of felony and other misdeeds: This is therefore in the name of the State, to command said slaves forthwith to surrender themselves, and return home to their Masters. And we do hereby require the Sheriff of said County of Robeson, to make kiligent search and pursuit after the said slaves, and then having foound, to apprehend and secure, so that they may be conveyed to their Masters, or otherwise be discharged as the Law directs, and the said Sheriff is hereby authorized and empowered to raise and take with him, such force of his county, as he shall think fit for apprehending the said slaves. And we do hereby, by virtue of the Act of Assembly in such case provided, intimate and declare, that is said slaves, named, do not surrender themselves, and return home immediately after the publication of these presents, that any person may kill and destroy, the said slaves, without accusation, or impeachment of any crime or offense by so doing and without incurring any Penalty thereby.
