The petition of Charles McRae and his wife Margaret Ann McRae, of the county and State aforesaid, respectfully Shows that they wish to adopt, in accordance with the Law of North Carolina ratified the 3d day of March 1873, a minor child named Duncan DouglaSs Lee, of the age of about ten years – Son of Jeremiah H. Lee and Isabella Lee – the said Jeremiah H. being still alive (the mother os said Duncan DouglaSs Lee having died in the year 1867) and that said minor has been living with your petitioners Charles McRae and his wife Margaret Ann McRae for the past 6 years. Your petitioners further show that they desire to adopt said minor, Duncan DouglaSs Lee, for the period of his natural life in every respect as their own child or children to inherit from them both real and personal property. Your petitioners further show that this application by and with the consent of the father of the minor child Duncan DouglaSs Lee: and furthermore that said child owns no property Your petitioners expreSsly desire that in the event one of them survives the other, the survivor shallll, use and control ttthhhe real and personal property. Yet on the death of the Survivor the same shall descend in vest in the said Duncan DouglaSs Lee equally with any other child they may yet have born to them. Your petitioners further show that nothing in this petition is intended as a restriction on either one of them from making any and every disposition of the property they now own or may hereafter own, as they may see proper ~ and that the true intent of this petition is to make the said Duncan DouglaSs Lee to inherit any real and personal estate which your petitioners may own at the time of their death - reserving to each one of your petitioners the right title and interest they now have in their property during their joint or several lives – And it is expreSsly understood in this one petition, that in the event Charles McRae, one of the petitioners should\ die before his wife, She is to have the real and personal property then on hand to do with as she may deem best during her life, and the same provisions to be made in the event Margaret Ann McRae should die before her husband – he is to have own the real and personal property then on hand like privilege – On the death of bother, however, the property real and personal shall vest in said minor – And should a child hereafter be born for your petitioners or either of them, said child or children shall inherit equally with the said Duncan DouglaSs Lee share and share alike. Lee and Isabella Lee now deceased And it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that – the said petitioners are proper and suitable perons and it appearing to my satisfaction that Jeremiah H. Lee, the surviving parent of the said Duncan DouglaSs Lee is willing to have the petitioners to adopt the said minor child. Now therefore, I William A. Dick, Clerk of the Superior Court for the County of Robeson do hereby grant to the said Charles McRae and wife Margaret Ann McRae letters of adoption in accordance with the prayer of the petitioners – hereby establishing between the said Charles McRae and Margaret Ann McRae and Duncan DouglaSs Lee the relations of parent and child during the life time of the said minor together with all the duties powers and rights belonging to the actual relationship of parent and child.
