PARTITION OF THE LANDS OF BURWELL REVELS, DECEASED, 1848
 
“Report of ComiSsioners appointed by Court to make Partition of the lands of 
Burwell Revels decd

To the worshipful the Justices of the Court of Pleas and Quarter SeSsions of 
Robeson County ~

   The undersigned CommiSsioners appointed by the Worshipful Court of Pleas 
and Quarter Sessions of the County aforesaid to Divide and appropreate the 
real Estate in the said County claimed by Jordan Revels  Isaac Revels  Elias 
Revels  Jeremiah Revels  Rowland Mercer  and David Locklear and his wife 
Esther as Tenants in Common among the Said tenants in Common preceded on 
this           day of 1848 to Divide and appropriate the said lands after 
having been duly sworn on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God to do equal and 
impartial Justice among the Several Claimants of the said land according to 
the best of our shall and ability  The division and appropriation of the said 
land by us made is as follows ~

Lot No 1 Beginning at a pine the Corner of the old Survey Runs N 11’ W. 31. 
chains to a black gum poplar ad five pines in the original line on the swamp 
then the various courses of the original lines to the beginning Containing 
twenty acres valued at twenty dollars drawn as the Share of John Revels and 
allotted to Rowland Mercer –

Lot No. 2  Beginning at a stake and two pines in Wisharts line and runs with 
his line N 40. E 6 chains and 56 links to his corner a Stake in a Bay then N 
11’ W. 32 chains to a stake three small oaks – and a lightwood stump in the 
original line then a long that line S 50’ W 6 chains & fifty links to the 
Corner of Lot No 1 – then along that line to the beginning.  Containing 20 
acres Drawn as the share of Esther Locklear and allotted to her valued At $20 –

Lot No 3 Beginning at the Second Corner of lot No 2 and Runs – No 35, E. 8 
chains – to a lightwood knot by three lightwood Stumps about 100 yards South 
of David Revels House then N 11 W. 31. chains to a pine two oaks & pine in the 
original line then S 50 W 7. chains to the Corner of lot No 2. then along that 
line to the Beginning Containing 20 acres valued at $15   Drawn for Jeremiah 
Revels as his Share and allotted to him.

Lot. No 4.  Beginning at a lightwood Knot the second Corner of Lot. No 3. & 
runs N 35  E 12 chains & 50 links to a stake two Small BlackJacks and Sweet 
Gum in the original line then along that line N. 25 ‘ W 9’ chains & fifty 
links to a stake then then N 30 W. 3 chains & 50 links to Israels Corner then 
along that line N. 2 E. 18 chains to the original Corner then S. 50. W. 13. 
chains to the Corner of No 3. then as that line to the beginning. Drawn as the 
share of Jordan Revels and allotted to him And valued at $20.

Lot No 5. Beginning at the second Corner of lot No 4. and runs S 25 E. 2 
chains & 50 links to the Corner of the Old Survey then S. 33 E. 10 Chains to a 
stake near John Revels’s old well – S 45.  W.15 chains to a Stake and two 
pines in Wisharts line then along his line N. 45. W. 10 chain to his corner 
then along the other lines to the Beginning 20 acres valued at $15 – drawn as 
the share of Isaac Revels and allotted to him.

Lot No 6. Beginning at the 4th Corner of Lot. No 5 and runs as that line N. 45 
E 13. chains to the 2nd Corner of lot No 5 then along the original line S 33 
E. 16. chains to a Stake and two pines then S 33. W 15. chains to a stake 
Dennis Revels Corner in Wisharts line then along his line N 40. E 4. chs. To 
his Corner then direct to the beginning – Containing 20 acres valued at $25.  
Drawn as the share of Elias Revels and allotted to him.

Lot No. 7. Beginning at Dennis Revels Corner & Runs N 33. e 15 chains to a 
Stake and two pines in the Original line then as that line S33. E. 26. chains 
to a Stake then S 11. W. 5. chains to Denis Revels Corner then as his line to 
the Beginning valued At $25.  Drawn as the share of David Revels and allotted 
to Rowland Mercer all of which will appear by the plat annexed and Charge lot 
No.  with the sum of five dollars to be paid to Lot No. 3. and charged  - No. 
7. with the sum of five dollars to be paid to Lot No 5. all of which is 
respectfully Submitted

From the above division we find that Burwell Revels had seven children, i.e.:

1) John Revels

2) Esther Locklear

3) Jeremiah Revels

4) Jordan Revels, father of William Coleman Revels, who was born in 1838, see 
later.

5) Isaac Revels

6) Elias Revels

7) David Revels.
