In the year 1864 there were several companies of Senior Reserves and Supporting Forces, created here in southeastern North Carolina. One of those ompanies raised in this area was under the leadership of Captain Neill McNeill of Robeson County. The main enrollments took place in Wilmington, New Hanover County on November 10, 1864, but from information given by these enlisted men, their places of birth was from all over the Cape Fear River region. The Compiled Service Records reveals that these men were from Cumberland, Harnett, Richmond, Robeson, Bladen, and New Hanover counties. Upon enlistment the men the enrolling officer with the following information: When born [usually Month and Year, but sometimes the whole birth date]; birth place; Height [feet and inches]; Complexion; color of hair and eyes; and occupation.
