Troops (2nd Regiment N.C. Artillery). He had resided in Cumberland county at the time of his original enlsitment on March 1, 1862. Transfered to this company [Company D, 61st NCT]on November 29, 1862. Reported present throught April 30, 1863. Reported in hospital at Charleston, South Carolina, in May- August 1863. Appointed 3rd Lieutenant of Company A, 44th REgiment N.C. Troops. December 1, 1863, and transferred. He was cited for a very heroic deed during a bombardment of Battery Wagner at the end of July 1863. He put his skills as an artilleryman to use firing a shot that hit one of the attacking Yankee gunboats. He actually loaded, sighted and firest the 10" Columbiad all by himself! Additional Comments: I have submitted this because Robeson County men were serving in the same brigade under General Thomas L. Clingman during the war. They shared many of the same experiences and in this case, while they were at Battery Wagner, I am sure they got news of this deed first hand and they must have all been proud of him. Attached is a copy of a newspaper article featuring his brave deed.
