The veteran holding the flag is John W. Atkinson at a reunion of the 51st NCT on September 5, 1903 at Syke Mill near Trefall, N.C. Atkinson was wounded five times during his service. He is buried in Cross Creek Cemetery in Fayetteville, N.C. The original picture was submitted by Atkinson's grandson, Howard Muse. Does anyone have a better copy of this photo they could share? Additional Comments: Many men of Robeson County and surrounding counties filled the ranks of the 51st North Carolina Troops.
