Enrolled on September 3, 1863 as a Conscript by Capt. William M. Swann, Enrolling Officer of the 4th Congressional District, North Carolina. He was placed in the custody of Col. Thomas Morisey. Now in the custody of Major W. F. French with the intent of sending him to the camp of Conscripts in Raleigh, N.C. Mercer, being a Shoemaker for more than ten years prior to the war, filed a Petition of Habeus Corpus on October 29, 1863 before Judge Robert S. French, Robeson County, North Carolina, J. R.
