Raleigh N.C. 18th Oct 1866 M Wilkerson Additional Comments: Private Malcom Wilkerson, Co E, 51st North Carolina Troops, was among the veterans of North Carolina to receive an artificial limb for losses during the War Between the States. There are seven documents filed in the holdings of the Department of Cultural Resources, Division of Archives and History, in Raleigh, North Carolina, relating to Wilkerson's procurement of an artificial limb. On August 18, 1866, he received an upper left leg, manufactured by Jewett's Patent Leg Co. The $70.00 limb was provided to him by the state. The signature on the document shown here is believed to be an actual signature of Wilkerson. All documents found prior to this one only displayed an "X" indicating his mark as a signature. This document was found in the Governor's Papers, Jonathan Worth, Box 3. The author is very grateful to Ansley Herring Wegner - Reference Archivist --North Carolina Division of Archives and History, for assistance in obtaining this information.
