He enrolled for active service on February 28, 1862 at Lumberton, North Carolina in Captain Willis P. Moore's Company. He was 17 years old at the time he enlisted as a farmer by occupation. He was five feet and ten inches tall. Colonel John L. Cantwell mustered him into active service in Wilmington, North Carolina on April 10, 1862 for a period of three years or the war. Unfortunately, James had become afflicted with Rubella (German Measles) and was hospitalized at Confederate Hospital Number 4, in Wilmington, North Carolina. He was furloughed on June 13, 1862. He never returned to active duty and was discharged on June 1, 1863. This would most like save his life from the great assault on Battery Wagner, which took place on July 18, 1863. The 51st North Carolina Troops experienced the brunt of the attack on that day. Malcom, his brother would be wounded on July 17 at Battery Wagner, resulting in the loss of his left leg near the hip. A poisoned ball wounded him. The information found on his Certificate of Disability for discharge states that he was of sallow complexion with black eyes and black hair. The Company Commander, Captain Willis H. Pope said, "During the last two months, said soldier has been unfit to duty Sixty Days. In June 1862, Private Wilkerson had a very severe attack of fever and from its effects he has never recovered -- his life has been despaired of several times since." Station: Camp Davis W.H. Reported absent sick from September, 1862, through May , 1863. Discharged on June 4, 1863, by reason of "a very severe attack of fever..."
