The men from this regiment were recruited from Robeson County as well as surrounding counties. The majority of the men of Company D, E, and F were from Robeson. These soldiers are on a register of the Wayside (1st Louisiana) Confederate Hospital that existed from 1862-1865 in Charleston, SC. The first location was at 564 King Street. That two room facility being to small caused a relocation to the South Carolina Military College (The Citadel) and even moved once more to an inactive steam planing mill on King Street opposite Cannon Street. The soldiers sent to this Wayside Hospital were evaluated and the ones who were healthy enough to travel were transported to hospitals further away from Charleston to places such as Summerville, Columbia and Augusta, Georgia. Some were brought here from a Confederate Hospital located on Trapman Street in Chareston. Many of the patients arrived in some cases the next day after being wounded. For example, those who were admitted on July 19th, 1863 were casualties from Battery Wagner on Morris Island.
