The Historical Commission in South Carolina issued a historical marker commemorating the Joshua Braveboy Plantation near Florence, SC, which was dedicated on Sunday February 23rd, 2014 at 3:00pm near the intersection of the Old Manning and Matthews Roads, near Lake City, SC. Joshua Braveboy, a free person of color, was here in Old Bladen, now present day Robeson Co NC up through the year 1768. Shortly thereafter he migrated south to present day Florence Co SC, where he acquired his plantation in 1772 from the South Carolina Colonial Government. Later, during the Revolutionary War he served bravely under Generals Hugh Giles and Francis Marion (The Swamp Fox). While serving under Generals Giles and Marion, he apparently returned with his commanding officers back to the area of his former home in present day Robeson, Bladen and Columbus Counties in southeastern North Carolina during the years of 1780 and 1781. Being from this area, it is most likely that he may have aided the troops, perhaps as a guide, in meandering and maneuvering throughout the low swamp lands of southeastern North Carolina. When Joshua Braveboy migrated from this area about 1770, he left various family members here in present day Robeson Co NC. From the records of Old Bladen and Robeson Counties, we find where the surname Braveboy, later evolved into Braboy and Brayboy. Their descendants are currently a part of the greater Lumbee-Cheraw Tribe, which is the largest non-reservation Indian tribe in the United States. The Revolutionary War Services of Joshua Braveboy, who was from, and actually served during this most defining war here in Robeson County, and surrounding areas here in southeastern North Carolina, and northeastern South Carolina.
