Robeson County, NC - John Brooks Revolutionary War Pension, 1853 February 24, 1933 Mr. Joseph Brooks Pembroke, NC Dear Sir: Reference is made to your personal request of this date for the record of John Brooks, a soldier in the Revolutionary War. The data furnished herein are obtained from the papers on file in Revolutionary War pension claim S.6732 based upon the military service of John Brooks in that war. While residing in Bladen (that part which was later Robeson) County, North Carolina, he enlisted, date not given, and served at various times on tours of from three to six months each as a private under Captains Alexander McNeill, Gibson and Hadly and Colonel Regan in the North Carolina Troops; he was in an engagement at "Bettice Bridge" and in the battle of Camden, where he and Captain Gibson, under whom he was serving, were captured, taken to Saint Augustine and held for about four months; he was discharged about the close of the war having served between three and four years in all. It was stated that all of his service was rendered in the Cape Fear country. John Brooks was allowed pension on his application executed May 30, 1853 at which time he was about ninety-five or ninety-six years of age and resided in Robeson County, North Carolina. He was allowed one hundred and sixty acres of land on Warrant Number 80030. For the location of the land, you should apply to the Commissioner of the General Land Office, Interior Department, this city citing the following warrant #80030-160-55. It is not stated that soldier was ever married. In 1853 one Tempy Brooks was a resident of Robeson County, North Carolina; in 1854, one Rowlin Brooks was a resident of Robeson County, North Carolina; and in 1855 one Rachel Brooks was aged about ninety years and resided in said Robeson County; no relationship of any of the above persons with surname Brooks to the soldier John Brooks was shown. In order to obtain the date of last payment of pension, the name and address of person paid and possibly the date of death of the Revolutionary War pensioner, John Brooks S.6732, you should address The Comptroller General, General Accounting Office, Records Division, this city, citing all of the following data: John Brooks, Certificate No.33411, issued March 20, 1858, rate $76.37 per annum, commenced March 4, 1831, Act of June 7, 1832, North Carolina Agency.
