All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/ncfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sam West sam.west.1@gmail.com January 3, 2017, 10:19 pm REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION APPLICATION OF JOHN HAMMONDS Declaration To obtain the benefit of the Act of CongreSs passed the 7th of June 1832 State of North Carolina ) Robeson County ( On this the 24 day of May 1852 Personally appeared before me an acting Justice Of the Peace in & for the said County Mr. John Hammonds resident of the said County aged about 98 years who having been by me duly sworn acc= ording to law doth upon aoth make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of CongreSs passed the 7 of June 1832 that he was a soldier of the Revolutionary was that for the loss of memory he cannot tell the time that he entered the service that he served as a private under Capt. John Cowper Major Jones Col. Dolison & others that he entered the service at Cheraw South Carolina that he went on an expedition to Charleston that he was in a battle at Camden one at Eutaw one at the Cowpens one at Betties Bridge & others which for the loss of memory he cannot at this time recollect & that he served nearly the whole period of the said war. That the reason why he did not apply for a pension at an earlier day was that he was so poor that he was unable to procure the service of any person to prosecute his claim. He there fore makes this application for the whole amount of pension due him up to this date for the services rendered by him in the Revolutionary war. his John X Hammonds mark Sworn to & subscribed on The day & year above mentioned before me. (Seal) State of North Carolina ) Robeson County ( We the undersigned, Acting Justices of the Peace in & for said County, do hereby certify, that we have exam= ined the foregoing declaration of Mr. John Ha= mmonds, & we believe that the statements he has made are correct & true, & that he is a man of strict truth, & full faith & credit are due his statements, whether on oath or otherwise; & we do futher certify, that we are acquainted with Said John Hammonds, & that he is one of the oldest citizens, that we know of in this part of the country; & we do believe that he is fully as old as he states. McLean, John Moore & Alxr. McMillan Esquires whose Genuine signatures appeare to the foregoing certificate that each of them are acting Justices of the Peace in & for said County of Robeson duly commissioned & sworn & that each of their official acts as such are intitled to full faith & credit & that the aforesaid Court is a court of record & that three Justices of the Peace are sufficient to hold the same & to transact common business necessary to be acted on in Said Court. On this the 27 day of July 1852 Personly appeared before me an acting Justice of the Peace in & for said county of Robeson Mr. John Hammonds resident of said County who having been duly sworn by me according to law depos= eth & saith that he served as a private in the militia of North Carolina, that he was in a Battle at Guilford, & the Battle pf Batties Bridge which were both in North Carolina. his John X Hammonds mark Sworn to & subscribed before me on the day & year above written John G. McLean an acting Justice of the Peace in & for said county do hereby certify that John Hammonds who made the above affidavit is a man of strict truth & that his statements whether on oath or otherwise are intitled to full faith & credit. (Seal) -------------------------------------------------------------- State of North Carolina ) Robeson County ( on this the 2nd day of November 1852 Personally appeared before me an acting Justice of the peace in & for said County Mr. Elias Paul who being duly sworn deposeth & saith that he is well acquainted with John Hammonds of said County that he often heard him Say that he was a soldier of the revolutionary war that he believes he was in the Battle of Guilford court House that he was at Gates defeat that he was under the command of Capt McNeill, Col Dobbison & others that he lived in Anson County N. Carolina before the revolutionary war that after the war ended he return- =ed to Anson County his home & lived there until about 45 years ago when he moved to this county where he has lived to the present day. That he always was & now is recognized as a revolution= =nary Soldier & futher that he believs that the said John Hammonds is about one hundred years of age. his Elias X Paul mark Sworn to & subscribed the date above written before me Test John G. McLean an acting Justice of the peace in & for said county do hereby certify that Mr. Elias Paul who made the foregoing affidavit is a man highly respected & of strict verasity & that full faith & credit are due to his Statements whether on oath or otherwise. AD 1855 personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace within and for said county and state John Hammond aged about one hundred & four years a resident of Robeson County State of North Carolina who being duly sworn according to Law, declares, that he is the identical John Hammond who served as a private in the Revolution. That he is now enjoying a pension under the Act of 7th June 1832 of $45.87 per annum, all of which will more fully appear by reference to his declaration now on file at the Pension Department – He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the Bounty Land to which he may be entitled under the act 3d March 1855.
