All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/ncfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sam West sam.west.1@gmail.com January 3, 2017, 10:13 pm REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION APPLICATION OF PATRICK SMITH SMITH, PATRICK (or PETER) - ANN W.4,072 Declaration In order to obtain the benefit of the Acts of CongreSs paSsed the 7th July 1838 – 3rd March 1843, + 17th June 1844; State of North Carolina ) Robeson County ( On this the 21st day of January 1852, personally appeared before the Sub- Scriber, an acting Justice of the Peace in + for said County, Archibald Smith, resident of said County, who having been duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefits of the provision of the Act of CongreSs of 7th July 1838, + of the sub- sequent Acts above mentioned, - That he is the Son of Patrick Smith, (sometimes called Peter Smith), who was a Soldier of the Revolutionary War; - That he has reason to believe, that his Father, the said Patrick Smith, served in a Light Horse Company, perhaps called, or attached to the State Legion, - as a private or under Officer, + also as Captain of a Light Horse Company; = Under what Officers, + how long, he is unable to state; but also for some time, under Captain Hadley; - Also, that for some ---------------------------------------------------- time, he Commanded a Light Horse Company; that these services were at different times; - the whole period of his public services being three or more years, as he has reason to believe: - That his Father, the said Patrick Smith, was married on the 24th Novr. 1785, to Ann Clark, the Mother of this Declaiment, in the County of Cum- berland, + that he died on the 4th day of Jly 1816; - that Mrs. Ann Smith, his widow, the Mother of this Declaimant, died on the 20th Octr. 1847, aged 89 years, 3 Months, + 27th days: He therefore makes this application, in behalf of himself, + of his Brother Daniel Smith, + of his Sisters Margaret Smith, + Ann Smith, who are the only sur- viving children, for the amount of Pension due her, the said Mrs. Ann Smith, up to the day of her death, on account of the Revolutionary Services of her Hus- band, the said Patrick Smith. We further certify that we were acquainted with the Mother of said Rev. Dr. Archibald Smith, widow of Patrick Smith, and that she was at her death one of the oldest citizens in this part of the country: That it was Known and believed that Patrick Smith was a Soldier of the Revolutionary War, and that Mrs. Ann Smith, the mother of the above mentioned Rev. Brown who being by me duly sworn deposeth and saith “That he was well acquaint= ed with Patrick Smith and frequently heard the said Patrick Smith speak of serving in the Revolutionary war as a Captain of a Light Horse Company and also speak of Chasing Col. Fanning and relate several incidents connected with his services in said war. He further states that the said Patrick Smith was always recognized as a soldier of the Revolutionary War and that he often saw the sword he used while Captain of the above mentioned Company. He further states that Mrs. Ann Smith was the widow of the above mentioned Patrick Smith and the mother of Rev. Dr. Archibald Smith and The other claimants for the pension due their mother the aforesaid Mrs. Ann Smith widow of the above Patrick Smith. Dr. Archibald Smith, who has ever, + universally, been acknowledsged as the Son of the said Patrick + Ann Smith: And further, That she heard of the death of the said Patrick Smith many years ago – she thinks, some Thirty or Forty years ago; + that she heard of the death of Mrs. Ann Smith, widow of the said Patrick Smith, only a few years ago. During the years 1812 and 1813 while a Student at School in the Neighborhood of Patrick Smith, be became personally + intimately acquainted with him + his wife Ann who was a Daughter of Gilbert Clark Esqr of Cumberland County. While he, the said Neill McLean, lived in Robeson County he learned that the said Patrick Smith was a zealous Whig and resisted the en- roachments of England with such determine- nation during the Revolutionary War as to volunteer his services as a Soldier or Officer to obtain the liberties of his Country. He further states that he was well acquaint- with all Patrick + Ann Smiths family. Their son Archibald Smith, these went to school with him – who afterwards studied + practiced Medicine; but who is now a Minister of the Gospel, + he is now present. And he further states that he never saw, or heard of any other Patrick Smith in this section of the State who was recognized + reputed to be Soldier or Officer in the Revolutionary war except, this man – the husband of Mrs. Ann Smith, + And he further states, that he heard of the death of this Patrick Smith many years ago, + of the death of his widow Mrs. Ann Smith only a few years ago. (Seal) ---------------------------------------------------------------- State of North Carolina ( Cumberland County ) August 26th 1852 This day personally came before me, Duncan Shaw, one of the Justices of the Peace in + for said County, Mr. Neill Munroe, a citizen of said County, who is now in his Ninety Third year, who being duly sworn by me, deposeth + saith, That during the Revolutionary war, + soon after the troubles in this part of the State commenced, he saw Captain Nathan King with a Company of Light-Horsemen, who stopped + took Breakfast at his Father’s, Daniel Mun- roe, who lived on Lower Little River in this Coun- ty – That there were several persons of the name of Smith with whom he was acquaint- ted, in King’s Company – That he had been ac- quainted with Patrick Smith from his earliest recollection, + he thinks, although he is not cer- tain, that Patrick Smith was one of the Com- pany, - That a man of the name of Dunfield was one of the Company, who afterwards fell into Captain Neill McCrainies Company, - That he believes, but he does not know, that Patrick Smith was in the service during all their troubles. That after the war was over, Patrick Smith Married Ann Clark of this County, + settled lived + died in Robeson County many years ago, + that his widow, Mrs. Ann Smith, outlived him a good many years – That Rev. Dr. Archibald Smith is universally acknowledged to be their Son; + that he knows of no other Patrick Smith, who was known, recognized or reputed to be a Soldier or Officer of the Revolutionary war. That during the Revolution- ary war, his Brother Duncan McDuffee served for a time in the American army under Cap- tain Neill McCrainie, + that he frequently visited home; - That Patrick Smith came home with him twice, + on one occasion they had a pris- oner, that from all the circumstances, he believes that Patrick Smith must have been in the service also. Patrick Smith wore a sword + carried Holster Pistols, such a were carried by Light Horsemen; + Neill McCranie’s was a Light Horse Company. That after the war was over he heard that Patrick Smith married a Daughter of Gilbert Clark of this County; And that he knows of no other Patrick Smith who was recognized + reputed as a Soldier or Officer of the Revolutionary war, + Rev. Patrick Smith came to her mother’s house with his company who stopped near to eat, and capt Smith stood in the door during their stay to prevent the soldiers (his men) from entering to commit any depredations and that she heard her mother say she was well acquainted with Capt. Patrick Smith. And this deponent further saith, she was acquainted with Mrs. Ann Smith the widow of Capt. Patrick Smith, and her family, one of whom is the Revd. That many years ago she recollects to have heard her Husband, John Clark, decd + her Brother in law Neill Clark decd frequently talking about said Patrick Smith ser- ving in said war, in which he held some high Office, at least as high as Captain, + there is an impression upon her mind that he might been promoted to Colonel. She cannot name any other persons whom she heard talking about it, but is was common fame, + her Husband + Brother in law spoke of Patrick Smith’s servi- ces in said war as a matter + generally + publicly known. And she further states, that it is a matter of public notoriety, that after the war was over, said Patrick Smith mar- ried Ann Clark of this County + neighborhood. + settled, lived, + died in Robeson County many years ago: That she was also acquainted with Mrs. Ann Smith, widow of said Patrick Smith, who died in Robeson not many years ago: That she had seen + known all their children, but more intimately + acquainted with their Son, the Rev. Dr. Archd. Smith, whose residence is in Robeson, but who is now Min- istering to us in holy things. And further she knows of no other Patrick Smith who was known, recognized + reputed as a soldier + Officer of the Revolutionary war except this said Patrick Smith. Clarke, Comptroller of Public Accounts in and for the State aforesaid, do hereby certify that it appears of record in my office, among the payments made by said State to sundry persons for Military services in the Revolutionary War, that Indent or Army certificate No. 5615 iSsued by the auditors of Wilmington District was paid by the Sheriff of Robeson County and to him allowed in settlement at the Public Treasury, and I am of opinion that Patrick Smith to whom said Indent was iSsued was an inhabitant of said county; I hereby certify that Robeson county was in Wilmington District and that the accounts of soldiers of that County should have been allowed by the Auditors of Wilmington District, and that the payments enumerated and set forth in my former certificate as follows Book W.
