Former Governor A. W. McLean and son, Mr. Wilton, Jr., Mr. J. Dickson McLean, of Lumberton, and Rev. J. E. Purcell D. D., who is visiting relatives in Red Springs, made an interesting visit Saturday to two old cemeteries in Hoke county. Mr. Purcell, son of the late J. E. Purcell of Red Springs, is head of men’s work of the Southern Presbyterian assembly, with headquarters in Richmond, Va. In the old Buffalo cemetery, about 10 miles above Raeford, Beatrice Purcell, greatgreat-great-grandmother of Messrs. A. W. and J. Dickson McLean and Mr. Purcell, was buried 104 years ago. She was a Revolutionary heroine and was twice married, her first husband being Malcolm Purcell and her second Daniel McEachern. In the old McEachern cemetery they found the grave of Christine McMillan, wife of Gilbert McMillan, who was buried there 160 years ago. She was a notable woman of the pre Revolutionary period and has many descendants in Robeson county.
