Its notoriety with its name was gained several decades agone when the fertility of its soil, its adaptability to raising the fleecy staple, was discovered. This was during that era just immediately succeeding the war between the States, known as the reconstruction period of the South-now too fresh, perhaps in the minds of many to need reference to. We would like to speak in this connection of the class of citizens who have been the guardians of this community since that time, but time and space forbid, hence we can only in this connection mention that this section was first settled by Scotch, who either came, or their ancestors came, directly from the mother country. So we find McEachern, McIntyre, McDaniel, McKoy, McGirt, prominent among the pioneer settlers and many of these names are still numerous and among the successful managers and land owners. And we may add the names Edens, McCallum, Rowland and Ward, of the recently acquired. A stranger in going over this section would notice, first, the neatness with which the farms are managed, the attentions given to the buildings thereon, keeping the ditches in order that the drainage may be complete, and all the minor details connected with the management of a well-ordered farm; and the conclusion will always be that these people have made farming a study-an art--- and that they have reached a point of perfection seldom approximated. We would specify only in one or two instances. The J. W. Ward farm, managed by Mr. J. F. Williams, whose sole control over several hundred acres of magnificent cotton, corn and oats can but give evidence of Mr. Ward's ability and rare judgment in his selection of a manager. Mr. W. B. McLellan would divide honors with some of his neighbors, judging from the splendid appearance of his cotton fields. We next come to the splendid farms of Messrs. A. Edens, Archie McCallum and W. W. Rowland, which if we could ever finish telling of their perfection, would complete our story. Our advise to any one that would enjoy the happy privilege of seeing the beautiful in nature and art combined, is not to fail to come to this Cotton Valley, where milk and honey continue to flow and where good cheer and warm welcome await all who come within her gates.
