To the Editor of the Observer: I noticed in the Observer a few days ago that some one had seen some Croatan Indians in Georgia and the question was asked "if there were Croatans in Georgia?" Of recent years the so-called Croatan Indians of Robeson County have been going to Georgia and upper Florida to work in the turpentine business. During the last three weeks a great number of them have gone to Florida and Georgia from near Pembroke, Rowland and Alfordsville, from the region called "Scuffle Town." They are excellent turpentine hands and the best of ditchers. The are large and bony, broad shoulders and well developed muscles, sharp, keen eyes. They have dark eyes and they go under several names - Croatans or mulattoes, the latter being the most popular name among the whites of the neighboring section. Then again they are called Indians by many. This is the name they themselves prefer. Some of them become very mad with you if you call the Croatans. The day on which I left Robeson, about a week ago, I saw fifteen hearty, robust boys board the train at Pembroke for the turpentine section of Florida. The famous Henry Berry Lowry has a son in Florida who went there many years ago, and is now doing a fine business in turpentine. It is probable that the supposed Croatans spoken of in Mr. Avery's article went to Georgia to prosecute the same line of business as Lowry's son in Florida. H.E.C.
