A friend who resides in Robeson County informs us of several recent discoveries of marl beds in that county. They were found on the lands of Jas. McGirt, Jas. Bracy and John McKellar, in the vicinity of Alfordsville, about four miles from the South Carolina line. It is said to be a very superior quality of marl, and the gentleman who gave us the information has specimens of it, which he will present for inspection to Prof. Kerr, the State Geologist. [Marl is a mixture of clays, carbonates of calcium and magnesium forming a loam used as fertilizer. The land belonged to James McGirt, son of Duncan McGirt and Elizabeth McLean] Additional Comments: Transcribed by Martie Groome-McGirt File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/robeson/newspapers/marlbeds580nw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/ncfiles/ File size: 1.3 Kb
