Clingman's brigade, composed of four N.C. regiments, has been in this place since the commencement of the bombardment of Morris Island. They have undergone more hardships, and more terrific shelling for the same length of time than any troops in the Confederate States since the war commenced, and, nothwithstanding all this, our sick soldiers--made sick by exposure on the Island--are refused admittance in the hospitals in Charleston." Comment on such treatment of our soldiers is unnecessary. As a set of this we are glad to learn from the Wilmington Journal that-- "Mr. George Robertson, Chairman of the Executive Committee, Charleston, requests us to state that the American Hotel, corner King and George streets, has been secured as a home for all soldiers arriving in the city of Charleston, where they will receive every attention in food and shelter free of all charge. All the papers in North Carolina and Virginia will confer a favor on the soldiers by giving the above as extensive circulation as possible." Additional Comments: General Clingman's Brigade consisted of the 8th, 31st, 51st, and 61st North Carolina Troops. The 51st was made up mostly of men from Robeson County and there were also many men from Robeson in the 31st.
