Robeson County, NC - Van Walters Is Taken At Still In Sterlings ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Van Walters Is Taken At Still In Sterlings Watched by Officers in Operation of Outfit----Bound Over on Felony Count. Van Walters, well-known Sterlings township man, was captured in the act of manufacturing whiskey by Township Constable R C Stone and Emory Lawson Tuesday morning after these men had lain in hiding for more than an hour and watched him. They saw him fire the still, get the beer to boiling and run off half a gallon of liquor before raiding. Previously they had traced the Walters mule and wagon over quite a distance of Swamp territory in the lowest end of Sterlings, near Fair Bluff. Taken with the man were the half gallon of whiskey, 3 barrels of beer, 3 empty barrels, a 60 gllon drum used for the still and another 30-gallon drum. The mule and wagon were confiscated. This was the second time Walters had been caught manufacturing, and the charge this time was made a felony. In Lumberton recorder's court Wednesday he was bound over to Superior court and recognized for his appearance.
