FOR W.P. BARKER – PROMINENT CITIZEN, ONE OF TOWN’S OLDEST RESIDENTS, DIES OF PNEUMONIA W.P. Barker, one of Lumberton’s oldest residents, substantial business man and farmer and useful citizen, died at his home in Lumberton Sunday at 4:45 a.m. from an attack of pneumonia, with which he was stricken Thursday night. He had been in poor health since November. Funeral services will be conducted from the home at 3:30 p.m. today by Dr. C.H. Durham, pastor of the First Baptist church of Lumberton, of which he was a member, assisted by Revs. W. J. Jones and G.N. Phillips of Salemburg and J.E. Blalock of Fairmont, and interment will be made in Meadowbrook cemetery. William Pink Barker was born on the Lumberton-Maxton road on Lumber river in Back Swamp township on July 12, 1853, a son of Wm. and Katie Musselwhite Barker. He was first married to Miss Susan Nance, daughter of Joshua and Nancy Nance of Back Swamp, who died June 30, 1878. From this union one son, C.M. Barker of Lumberton, survives, another son, William Hartwell, dying when 2 years old. On January 12, 1879, he married Miss Mary Atwood Warwick, daughter of John and Emma Warwick of Wisharts township. She lived until July 2, 1918. From this union 4 children survive – Senator J. Abner of Roseboro, A. Nash of Dallas, Texas, Mrs. S.E. Ballentine of Rocky Mount, Miss Bertha Barker of Lumberton. His third marriage on March 11, 1921, was to Mrs. D.B. Lewis of the Barnesville community, who survives. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. H.L. Broadwell of St. Pauls; a half-brother, N.A. Townsend of the B.T. section. In the Back Swamp community, Mr. Barker began a life of usefulness which he continued upon his removal to Lumberton in December, 1905. For 25 years he was superintendent of the Back Swamp Sunday school, for many years a deacon of the church. He served as member of the board of county commissioners. In Lumberton he was a member of the advisory board of the First Baptist church, a director in the First National bank and the National cotton mills, a member of the Masonic lodge. He had considerable farming interests in Back Swamp and Maxton townships in Robeson and also in Bladen county. Unassuming, he mingled with all classes, had a wide acquaintance and a large number of friends. Pallbearers will be: active – LeRoy and Grady W. Townsend, Drs. D.D. King and M.F. Skipper, J.T. McIntyre, Ambrose Lovett, G.A.
