BELL Splendid Tributes Paid Prominent Indian - Was Baptist Minister More than 50 Years Funeral services for Rev. J. J. Bell, promiment, Indian minsiter who died of kidney trouble at his home 7 miles north of Lumberton Wednesday, were conducted from the family cemetery near the home Sunday at 10 a.m. by Rev. F. A. Prevatt of R. 2 Lumberton, assisted by Rev. M. C. Lunsford of Pembroke, each of whom paid splended tributes to his life. An immense crowd attended, cars being parked along the road for a half a mile on either side of the cemetery. A choir from Mt. Olive church rendered several selections, among which was a favorite, "No Disappointments in Heaven." Pallbearers were Godwin Hunt, Stephen Hammonds, Luther Locklear, Lat Bruin, Loyd Hunt and George Locklear. Deceased was a grandson of the late Hardy Bell, who for a number of years, about the period of the Civil War, was in business in Lumberton. He joined the Baptist church when 17 years old and soon afterwards entered the ministry, in which he was active until his death at 70. He made his home all his life on the same tract of land, which was given his father by his grandfather and in turn given him by his father. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Nasby Hardin of R. 1, Lumberton; Mrs. Richard Hardin of Dunn; Curtis, Mrs. Loyd Locklear, Mrs. Hezzie Revels and Mrs. Cris Burney of R. 2, Lumberton; Sam of McColl, S.C.; Ila who married and lives in Michigan.
