Thursday, June 5, 1930 MR. E.J. BIGGS OF RENNERT DIES SUDDENLY HERE Death Came As He Sat at Breakfast Table at Home of Son-in-Law and Daughter - Funeral at Rozier Church at 5 P.M. Today COUNTY LOSES ONE OF MOST VALUABLE CITIZENS Mr. E.J. Biggs, Confederate Veteran, prominent farmer and one of Robeson County’s oldest and most valuable citizens, died suddenly here Tuesday morning about 7 o’clock at the home of his son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. J.T. McIntyre. Mr. Biggs had been in declining health for the past few weeks, and he and Mrs. Biggs had been visiting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. McIntyre. He was suffering from a leaking heart. While sitting at the breakfast table Tuesday morning he was stricken and made only two gasps for breath after he was removed by members of the family from his chair to his bed. Funeral Today 5 P.M. Funeral services will be conducted at 5 p.m. today from Rozier Baptist church, Saddletree township, by Rev. Scott Turner of Lumber Bridge, pastor, assisted by Dr. C.H. Durham and Rev. I.P. Hedgpeth of Lumberton. Interment will be made in the Biggs cemetery. In 85th Year. Mr. Biggs was born July 5, 1845. Confederate army in March, 1862, and was therefore in his 85th year. He volunteered for service in the serving in company F, 24th North Carolina regiment. Once during the conflict, in the siege around Petersburg, Va., he was wounded. On March 25, 2865, he was taken a prisoner and carried to Point Lookout, where he remained until he took the oath of allegiance on June 24, 1865, returning to Lumberton July 4. 64 Years of Wedded Life. Married on February 8, 1866, as the culmination of a courtship begun in their school days, Mr. and Mrs. Biggs enjoyed more than 64 years of an unusually devoted and happy wedded life. They were never separated more than two weeks and this occurred only once. On the past February 8 they celebrated with relatives here the 64th anniversary of their wedding. For 23 years Mr. Biggs was active superintendent of the Rozier Sunday school. Four years ago he was made superintendent emeritus. He was a senior deacon in the church and one of its most consecrated members. Temperate in all things, this fact probably accounted for his long life. He also had regularity of habits, was regular in his hours of sleeping, eating and all the walks of life. He had a wide circle of friends throughout the county. Surviving are his widow, who is 83; 5 sons - Messrs. K.M., J.T. and D.W., Lumberton merchants, Mr. C.J. of Rennert and Mr. Z.P. of Detroit, Mich., one daughter, Mrs. J.T. McIntyre of Lumberton; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Harrell of St. Pauls; 24 granchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Mr. Z.P. Biggs left Lumberton Tuesday morning for his home after a visit to his parents here.
